Upgrading My Transportation

After driving an old, beat-up car for years, I finally made the decision to upgrade my transportation. I had set aside a little money every month to use as a down payment, and I was ready to make a new car my own. I searched loads of car dealerships in my area, but one business stood out to me in particular. The salespeople were kind and not pushy, and they had a reputation for fair deals. I worked with them to find the right car, and the paperwork was a breeze. This blog is all about upgrading your transportation, and why you shouldn't be afraid to take the plunge.

Take A Trip Back In Time To Virginia City

Lauri Kivela

If you're planning a trip to Lake Tahoe and Reno, "The Biggest Little City in the World," when you tire of gambling at the casinos and hitting the slopes, consider venturing over to Virginia City for the day.

Virginia City, Nevada, is the site of the Comstock Lode, the first major discovery of silver in the United States in 1859. The area quickly developed and was a boomtown back in its heyday, and now it is a favorite stop for history buff tourists who want a break from skiing and casinos. Here are four things to do while visiting this Old West town:

Mining Tours

For over 80 years, the Comstock Lode was mined in Virginia City.  You can go on a guided tour of both the Chollar and Ponderosa Mines. See mining tunnels, shafts, ore, rock drills, and other old mining tools and apparatus. You can also tour the Comstock Gold Mill to see firsthand how gold was processed.

Pan For Gold

Visit the Virginia City Mining Company to try your hand at panning for gold. You may get gold, you might get silver, and you might end up with a precious gem. Visitors get to keep whatever they find, making it a fun adventure for the whole family. The DanCin Crystals Mining Company allows you to mine for crystals as well as fossils.

All Aboard

Hop on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad for a fabulous sightseeing tour. Ride on refurbished, vintage railway cars that are steam or diesel-powered. Travel around and in Virginia City over to Gold Hill, about a four-mile trip, or take the longer 24-mile trip to Carson City and back. During the tourist season, there are also special train trips on the Carson River Canyon, some of which offer additional events, such as wine tastings and dinner theater. You may even see wild mustangs roaming free as you ride the rails. If you want an easy way to see what the town has to offer, hop on the Virginia City Trolley for a quick ride around, complete with narration.

Crawl Back In Time

Every few weeks, Virginia City holds a pub crawl. Make your way through the many saloons that still look like they did in the Old West when the prospectors bellied up to the bar. There's no shortage of history and a cold drink in each establishment.

Virginia City does have a few lodging options available, but many people prefer to just visit for the day and use SUV services from Reno to Lake Tahoe and the surrounding towns.
